Our History
Two Calgary area professionals involved with brain injury survivors gathered some 30 family members together for a brainstorming session. They were interested in improving access to resources and services. Family support and advocacy were determined to be the primary concerns at the time. From this initial meeting, the seeds of SABIS were sown.
The Southern Alberta Brain Injury Interest Society (SABIS) was incorporated under the Societies Act of Alberta, May 27, 1985. The Society is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors whose members are elected at annual general membership meetings. Since it’s inception, SABIS has served over 1600 Calgarians affected by brain injury, their families and personal support network. We provide emotional support, service coordination, referrals to other community programs, advocacy, information and education.
